Over 60 ATPL requirements

According to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 1, section 1.2.5.2.1, once an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) holder passes the age of 60, they must sit six monthly medical examinations.

Therefore, the ATPL medical application process becomes more involved after the age of 60 years.

The information below will help DAMEs, DAOs and COs assist ATPL holders aged over 60 understand and navigate this process as well as avoid unnecessary tests and the associated potential costs.

These medical examinations are referred to as “Major” and “Minor” medicals.

In addition, if an applicant sits major medical within 28 days of their certificate expiration date, then their Class 1 License will be valid until 1 year from that same anniversary date, and an ATPL will be valid six months from that anniversary date.

If an applicant has been issued with a CASA Audit, their Major Medical certificate will be issued for 12 months (CPL) and their ATPL for 6 months. However, when the applicant on a CASA Audit applies for their Minor Medical, then their ATPL validity date will only be valid for the remaining 6 months of the Class 1 medical certificate.

If the applicant sits their medical prior to the 28 day period before their expiry date for either their Major or Minor medical, their anniversary date will change to the date they sit the medical.

Valid medical tests and specialist reports

CASA recommends that any specialist reports required for medical certification are done with the three months before the medical is due.

This is recommended as in order for a test to be valid for use in a CASA aviation medical application, it can be no more than 90 days old at the time of the medical.
