Examination requirements

Pilots and ATCs may need to undergo a number of medical tests in addition to the standard medical examination. All age required tests are due at the first renewal after the appropriate birthday(see the list below).

A required test or report should be performed within three months of the application for medical certificate to be considered by CASA as 'recent'. CASA may request a 'recent' (within three months) updated tests or reports if these have not been supplied. Failure to provide 'recent' reports may cause avoidable delay. Tests or reports performed outside of the three month time frame may still be relevant and should be provided.

Class 1 and 3 medical certificates

Test required on the initial issue of a medical certificate are:

ECG, audiogram, estimation of fasting serum lipids and fasting blood glucose, calculation of Cardiovascular risk and an eye examination by CASA Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist or Credentialed Optometrist.

Tests required for medical certificate renewals are:

ECGs are required at the first renewal after pilots turn 25, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40 years of age. After 40, they are required annually
Audiograms are required at the first renewal after the age 25 years then are required every five years.
Fasting lipids and glucose is required at the first renewal after the age of 25 years and every five years until age 60, when they are required annually.
Eye examination is required by a CASA Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist or Credentialed Optometrist at age 60 years every two years after.

Class 2

There are no special requirements, unless clinically indicated.

Farnsworth Lantern testing

Some applicants for medical certification with colour vision issues may require Farnsworth Lantern testing to be conducted and the report submitted to CASA. These applicants should refer to the list of testing facilities.
