CASA has issued the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) to guide Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs) in conducting aviation medical examinations in accordance with the DAME Handbook. The CPGs describe how CASA expects DAMEs will approach particular issues and matters during examinations. They may also indicate relevant factors and limitation types CASA may consider when deciding aviation medical certificate applications, noting its decisions are based on each applicant’s circumstances.
The CPGs cover specific medical conditions as well as more general topics. The guidelines are sorted into discrete topics, arranged alphabetically. Topics may relate to specific medical conditions or to general matters. DAMEs should refer to all applicable topics when undertaking examinations.
While CASA considers the CPGs reflect appropriate medical assessment methodologies in the context of aviation medical certification, they are designed to provide generic and indicative information only and advancements in medical science or clinical practice may affect their accuracy and currency. Accordingly, CASA does not warrant the accuracy, currency or completeness of the CPGs and will not be held liable for any loss caused by using them. While DAMEs may refer to the CPGs for guidance, each DAME remains responsible for using proper clinical judgement in undertaking examinations.
The CPGs are not intended as a statement of CASA’s policy, nor do they affect CASA’s duty to assess applications individually. DAMEs should not therefore rely on them as a definitive statement of how medical certification decisions will be made in each case.
CASA revises the Clinical Practice Guidelines from time to time to keep them as current as possible. DAMEs must ensure they always use the current version, which is available on CASA’s website.
